| The Indus Knee |
|
Osteoarthritis of the knees is a very disabling
condition. Once the patient reaches a stage of intolerable
pain and severe deformity, then Total Knee Arthroplasty
(TKA) is the only solution. |
|
Our lifestyle as Indians is different from
the Westerners. Actions such as squatting, sitting cross
legged are part of our everyday life. Even the size and
shape of our bones is different. |
|
Till recently, the prosthesis that were
available for TKA, were all imported. The problem with
these prosthesis is that they are made to suite the western
lifestyle. They are designed for the bony architecture
of the Westerners. Moreover they are expensive keeping
them out of reach of the common man. |
|
Keeping this in mind, Dr K. H. Sancheti
designed the Indus prosthesis. This is a knee joint made
by an Indian for Indians.
Dr K. H. Sancheti studied the
C. T. Scans of 500 male and female normal knee joints
as his basic anthropological research and finalized 5
different sizes for the Indian Knee. |
|
| The Indus knee has the following unique features |
|
 |
The Indus knee is available in sizes that are suitable
to the Indian Architecture. |
 |
It is also
a bone sparing design, meaning very less bone is removed
from the patient’s knee. |
 |
It is a posterior
stabilized tricondylar design which allows greater
knee bending and enables the patient to squat or sit
cross legged after the surgery. |
 |
It has special
design features to reduce contact stresses so as to
prolong the life of the joint. |
 |
Since it
is indigenously manufactured, it is affordable. |
