Scripting Destiny…. A story worth telling!
‘Scripting Destiny’- a biography of Dr. K.H. Sancheti, is an enriching read that illustrates the huge contribution of a remarkably modest but brilliant man in the field of Orthopaedics and his continued effort to serve humanity.
The book speaks of the legacy of one of the most renowned Orthopaedic Surgeons of the country, who through his gentle personality and passion for serving others, inspires everyone to reach for the skies.
Padmabhushan K.H. Sancheti is a man with a never-ending thirst for knowledge; the epitome of humility, who tirelessly chases his dream of serving humanity in a meaningful and measurable way. In doing so, he founded one of the largest single speciality hospitals in South East Asia – Sancheti Institute of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.
What started off as a modest 10-bedded Orthopaedic clinic with four staff members, quickly grew into a 210-bedded single-speciality state-of-the-art hospital. Today, the simple yet prominent white structure of SIOR in Shivaji Nagar stands for a welcoming ambience and pleasant staff members with a speciality to heal the most excruciating of pains. SIOR nurses over 21,000 outpatients and 3,200 inpatients on an average in a year. Over 6721 surgeries are carried out every year of which at least 1000 surgeries are joint surgeries.
His desire to alleviate human suffering motivated Dr. K. H. Sancheti to research innovative methods and seek affordable medication so that patients of all economic backgrounds may have access to the therapy. Early in the course of his practice, Dr. K. H. Sancheti realized that imported joints, because of their high cost, were not suitable for the Indian patient. In addition, Indian patients desired greater flexion of the knee. This led to the design of India’s first high flex design – the Indus knee joint. In August 2005, the INDUS knee was successfully implemented for the first time on a crippled arthritic patient, and a dream became reality. He also developed SMP – a partial hip joint prosthesis which can be customized to a patient’s hip size and structure. With an unfailing combination of professional expertise and entrepreneurship, he has started working on designing and developing a total hip joint replacement prosthesis. Combining ‘Innovation’ and ‘Vision’, the project is named INNOVIS. In no small measure, it is due to his extraordinary and incessant dedication that Sancheti Hospital, now, is an NABH accredited institute.
For his drive against polio and his contribution to society, medicine and medical education Dr. K.H. Sancheti became the only doctor to get conferred with the highest civilian awards of the nation – Padmabhushan in 2003, Padmashree in 1992, Padmavibhushan in 2012 and the prestigious Dr B C Roy National Award on July 1st, 2016.
With his uncanny ability to balance all fronts, Dr. K.H. Sancheti is a self-taught architect and hospital planner, consultant, teacher, mentor, friend, family man, and a repository of vast experience.
With perfection, professionalism, and an incredible capacity for humanity, Dr. K. H. Sancheti still diligently works towards his mission of serving mankind at the age of 75. Because he rightly believes, “Life is movement; movement is life’’.
