What is arthroscopy ?
The arthroscope is a fiber optic instrument (narrower than a pen) which is inserted into the knee joint through two small incisions. A camera is attached to the arthroscope and the image is viewed on a TV monitor. The arthroscope allows full evaluation of the entire knee joint, including the knee (patella), the cartilage surfaces, the meniscus, the ligaments (ACL & PCL), and the joint lining.
Small instruments ranging from 3-5 millimeters in size are inserted through the incisions so that the joint structures can be felt for any damage, diagnose the injury, and then repair, reconstruct, or remove the damaged tissue. Before the development of arthroscopy, large incisions had to be made over the knee joint to treat or diagnose injuries. Today's arthroscopic techniques allow more complete evaluations of the knee joint while accelerating the rehabilitation process.

It is easy to diagnose & treat conditions like meniscal pathologies, ligament tears , patellar problems & other pathologies, with least morbidity, and an early return to routine activities. Further, safe & effective management on day care basis is possible.

Arthroscopy of Knee
Reconstruction of torn Anterior Cruciate ligament is done routinely with excellent results, using the Quadrupled Semitendinosus graft. Repair of meniscal tears, is done in indicated cases. Excision of loose bodies, debridement & joint lavage is done arthroscopically in cases of arthritis, bringing enormous relief of symptoms. In Rheumatoid Arthritis cases, arthroscopic synovial biopsy & synovectomy is done.Mobilisation of stiff Knee joints can be done using arthroscopic Adhesiolysis & manipulation.Special equipment for Arthroscopic Surgery, including Arthroscopic Shavers, high resolution digital camera ,instruments for reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate ligament are available, and are comparable to the best standard worldwide.
Arthroscopy of the shoulder is done to evaluate intraarticular pathology around the shoulder. A variety of procedures such as Diagnostic arthroscopy for Shoulder injuries, Non traumatic shoulder problems, and therapeutic procedures like repair of rotator cuff tears, surgery for recurrent dislocation of shoulder, Sports injuries, and arthritis related problems can be tackled effectively with an arthroscope.
